A good towel should feel soft, dry you fast and still feel good after months of washing. Egyptian cotton has a reputation for doing all three, which is why it costs more.
But the label alone doesn't guarantee a better towel. Here's what actually matters before you pay the premium.
What is Egyptian cotton?
Egyptian cotton is cotton grown in Egypt, mostly from long staple and extra long staple varieties. When growers talk about staple, they mean how long each individual fibre is.
Longer fibres can be spun into finer, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends. That's why good Egyptian cotton feels smooth and holds up well over time.
The catch is that not every towel labelled "Egyptian cotton" uses those long fibres. Some blend it with shorter cotton, and some aren't Egyptian cotton at all.
Watch out for fake Egyptian cotton
This happens more than most people think. In 2016, Target in the US pulled sheets it had sold as Egyptian cotton after finding its supplier, Welspun, had used other cotton. If a major retailer can get caught out, so can you.
Before you buy:
● • Look for the Cotton Egypt Association logo, which certifies genuine Egyptian cotton.
● • Read the label closely. You want to see 100% Egyptian cotton. Words like "blend" or "made with" usually mean it's mixed with cheaper cotton.
● • Be wary of very low prices. Genuine Egyptian cotton costs more to grow and process.
Why people pay more for it
● Softness. Finer, smoother yarn feels gentler on your skin.
● Absorbency. Cotton soaks up water well, and most cotton towels absorb even better after the first few washes once factory finishes rinse out.
● Durability. Stronger yarn means less shedding and fewer pulled loops over time.
But construction matters as much as the fibre. Two towels made from the same cotton can feel completely different depending on the weave, loop height and weight.
Egyptian cotton vs organic cotton
These two get mixed up a lot, but they describe different things. Egyptian cotton is about where the cotton is grown and the length of its fibres. Organic cotton is about how it's grown: without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
So a towel can be Egyptian, organic, both or neither. If you want an organic claim you can trust, look for GOTS certification on the label.
If how your towel is made matters to you, our organic cotton bath towels are a good place to start.
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It tells you how heavy and dense a towel is.
| GSM | Feel | Best for |
| 300 to 400 | Light and thin | Gym, travel, humid climates |
| 400 to 600 | Medium weight | Everyday use |
| 600 and up | Thick and plush | That hotel feel |
Higher isn't automatically better. In humid parts of Australia, a heavy towel can stay damp for hours and start to smell musty.
For daily showers, mid weight everyday bath towels hit the sweet spot. If you want more coverage after a shower, bath sheets are larger than a standard bath towel.
Is a towel set worth it?
If you're replacing several towels at once, a matching set makes your bathroom look put together. It usually works out cheaper per towel than buying them one by one.
Before you buy a set, check how many towels you get in each size, what fabric they're made from and the care instructions. Our 6 piece towel sets are an easy way to refresh the whole bathroom in one go.
How to make any good towel last longer
● Wash the towels before you use them.
● Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibres and makes towels less absorbent.
● Go easy on detergent. Too much builds up in the loops and leaves towels stiff.
● Wash warm, not hot, and avoid high dryer heat.
● Hang towels spread out so they dry fully between uses.
So, are Egyptian cotton towels worth it?
Yes, if they're genuine, well made and you care about softness and long life. No, if you're only paying extra for the label.
Check the certification, GSM, size and care instructions before you buy. A well made towel from good quality cotton will always beat a poorly made one with "Egyptian" on the tag.

FAQs
Do Egyptian cotton towels last longer than regular cotton towels?
Genuine ones usually do, because longer fibres make stronger yarn that resists wear. That said, the weave and the way you wash it play just as big a role.
How can I tell if a towel is real Egyptian cotton?
Look for the Cotton Egypt Association logo and a label that says "100% Egyptian cotton". If the price looks too good to be true, it probably isn't the real thing.
Is a heavier towel always better?
No. A heavier towel feels plush but takes longer to dry. A lighter one dries faster and suits humid weather.
Why isn't my new towel absorbing water well?
New towels often have a factory finish on them. Wash them a few times without fabric softener and they'll absorb much better.
Is organic cotton the same as Egyptian cotton?
No. Organic describes how cotton is farmed, while Egyptian describes where it's grown and its fibre length. A towel can be both.
