For most people the best thread count for cotton sheets sits between 600 and 1200. In that range the fabric is soft, breathable and strong enough to last years of washing. Going higher does not always mean better, because the fibre and the weave matter just as much as the number.
What thread count actually means
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, counting both directions. A higher count usually means finer threads packed closer together, which feels smoother. But two sheets with the same number can feel completely different if one is cotton and the other is a blend.
Thread count by fabric
| Sheet | Fabric and weave | How it feels |
|---|---|---|
| 600TC | 100% cotton, percale | Crisp and cool, great for summer and hot sleepers |
| 1000TC | 100% cotton | Soft and smooth, an easy all year choice |
| 1200TC | 100% cotton, sateen | Silky with a soft sheen, slightly warmer |
| 1500TC | Cotton rich blend | Smooth and durable, fewer wrinkles |
| 2000TC | Bamboo and microfibre blend | Very soft and light, easy care |
Weave matters as much as the number
Percale is a simple one over one weave. It feels crisp, like a fresh hotel sheet, and lets air move through, so it stays cool. Sateen floats more threads on the surface, which gives a smoother, silkier feel and a little more warmth. If you sleep hot, a 600TC percale often feels better than a 1200TC sateen, even though the number is lower.
Be careful with very high numbers
Blends made with microfibre use very fine fibres, so they reach high thread counts easily. They can feel lovely and soft, but compare them with other blends rather than with pure cotton. When you compare cotton sheets, compare cotton with cotton.
How to choose
- You sleep hot or live somewhere humid: 600TC percale.
- You want one set for every season: 1000TC pure cotton.
- You love a smooth, hotel feel: 1200TC sateen.
- You want low maintenance and fewer wrinkles: 1500TC cotton rich or 2000TC blend.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1000 thread count good for sheets?
Yes. A 1000TC pure cotton sheet is soft, breathable and durable, which makes it one of the best value choices for everyday use.
Is a higher thread count always softer?
No. Fibre quality and weave change the feel as much as the number. A well made 600TC percale can feel better than a poorly made sheet with a much higher count.
What thread count is best for hot sleepers?
A 600TC to 1000TC cotton percale breathes best. Our guide on bedding for hot and cold sleepers has more tips.
